Some Natural ways to Boost Immune System

Boosting Your Immune System Naturally: An Ayurvedic Practitioner’s Guide

In today’s fast-paced world, everyone is looking for ways to strengthen their immune system. Whether it’s to ward off seasonal illnesses or to maintain overall health, a robust immune system is crucial. As an Ayurvedic practitioner with years of experience, I’ve come across numerous methods to boost immunity. However, in this guide, I’ll share only those practices and remedies that I personally implement regularly, or occasionally, depending on the needs of my body and mind. These strategies revolve around adhering to Ayurvedic principles and incorporating specific Ayurvedic medicines into my daily routine.

### The Power of Routine: Ayurvedic Dincharya

**Early to Bed, Early to Rise:** The foundation of a healthy immune system starts with a disciplined lifestyle. I follow the age-old adage of going to bed early and waking up early. This aligns with the Ayurvedic concept of Dincharya, which emphasizes the importance of living in harmony with natural rhythms. Waking up before sunrise is believed to enhance vitality and mental clarity.

**Morning Hydration Ritual:** Upon waking, I drink a glass of plain water without rinsing my mouth first. This might seem unusual, but there’s a reason behind it. According to Ayurveda, the saliva that accumulates in the mouth overnight has properties that aid in digestion and overall health. By drinking water before rinsing, I allow this beneficial saliva to enter my digestive system, helping to cleanse my bowels and kickstart my metabolism for the day.

**Morning Routine and Exercise:** By 6 am, I complete my morning routine, which includes bathing. This is followed by either a 5 km walk or an hour of yoga, depending on the day. Alternating between these two activities ensures that both my body and mind are well-balanced. Physical activity, especially in the morning, is crucial for maintaining a strong immune system as it helps in the circulation of lymph, which is integral to immune function.

**Post-Exercise Hydration and Supplementation:** After returning from my walk or yoga session, I drink another glass of plain water. This is followed by two tablets of Giloy Ghanvati, a potent Ayurvedic herb known for its immune-boosting properties. Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) has been traditionally used in Ayurveda to enhance the body’s resistance to infections and improve overall health. It’s rich in antioxidants, which help fight free radicals and keep the cells healthy.

### Nourishing the Body with the Right Foods

**Breakfast:** My breakfast is simple yet nutritious, consisting of fruits and salad seasoned with Kala Namak (black salt). On days when there’s leftover roti or bread from the previous night, I boil the pieces in milk and consume them. This combination is easy to digest and provides sustained energy throughout the morning. I also take a spoonful of our homemade Chyawanprash, a traditional Ayurvedic jam made from a blend of herbs, fruits, and spices. Chyawanprash is renowned for its ability to rejuvenate the body, enhance digestion, and strengthen the immune system.

**Hydration Between Meals:** I avoid drinking water for two hours after breakfast to allow my body to fully digest the meal. After this period, I drink half to one glass of plain water every hour until lunch. Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and helps in the efficient functioning of the immune system.

**Lunch:** My lunch is centered around cooked green vegetables, which I consume in larger quantities than usual. Green vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are vital for immune health. In my household, non-vegetarian food is not allowed, but for those who do consume it, I recommend having it only at lunchtime and never at dinner, as it’s easier to digest earlier in the day.

### Evening Routine and Dinner

**Evening Supplementation:** In the evening, I take another teaspoonful of Chyawanprash along with a cup of tea. This helps maintain my energy levels and supports my immune system as the day winds down.

**Dinner and Bedtime:** Dinner is served between 7:30 and 8 pm. Before eating, I take another two tablets of Giloy Ghanvati with plain water. This routine not only supports digestion but also ensures that my immune system remains active during the night. I aim to go to bed between 9 and 10 pm, and I find that I fall asleep quickly, thanks to waking up early and maintaining a disciplined schedule. Importantly, I avoid using mobile devices in bed, as they can disrupt sleep and hinder the body’s natural healing processes.

### Conclusion

At 62 years age in 2024, I’m fortunate not to suffer from any chronic illnesses, which I attribute to my consistent adherence to these Ayurvedic practices. By following a natural and disciplined lifestyle, I’ve been able to maintain my health and boost my immune system without relying on medication for any ailments.

I hope you find this guide helpful and that it inspires you to incorporate some of these natural methods into your own routine. By embracing Ayurvedic principles, you can not only boost your immunity but also achieve a balanced and healthy life.
